Location: Washington Township Cemetery, on the banks of the inland
river Pine, south of Carsonville, Michigan.
Size: 20x40 feet, sufficient for 20 graves.
Original Purchaser: Walter VanMeer
Purpose: Burial plot for his father, David VanMeer, who was ailing
and approaching 90 at the time.
Later Burials: Walter VanMeer, his wife Bertha, and two children of
the Louis and Anna Maria marriage who were killed within six months
of each other in unrelated accidents. A recent addition, David VanMeer,
great-great-grandson of Walter's father David, and son of my brother
Arley, who suffered a heart attack at the age of 60 in 2003.
Who may be buried in the family plot? Any VanMeer family member.
Original Cost: Was the $10 Walter paid too high or too low? Based on
economic values at the time and now, it may be about average. Then,
automobiles selling for $1000 or less would bear more than a $20,000
price tag today. Modern three-bedroom homes selling at the time for
$15,000 would, at the present time, sell for $100,000 or more.
